The family of a woman who passed away after delivering a stillborn baby at a market shelter in Nakonde is facing financial challenges and lacks the means to transport the bodies back home.

The woman, Josephine Mumba, aged 46, was a market vendor from Chinsali and had been residing at the Nakonde Town Centre Market shelter for several weeks. Some fellow vendors claimed that she had not disclosed her pregnancy and had attributed her swollen stomach to other causes.

On Monday night, she gave birth to a female baby who was stillborn and allegedly died shortly after. Both the mother and the baby were rushed to the Nakonde Urban Clinic, where Josephine succumbed to excessive bleeding.

Her family, which includes her father and her husband, Bupe Kasomo, is en route to Nakonde from Chinsali and Serenje, their respective places of residence. They have decided to lay both Josephine and the baby to rest in Nakonde and subsequently hold a funeral service in Serenje, her hometown. They are expected to arrive in Nakonde late this evening and conduct the burial tomorrow.

Josephine leaves behind eight children from her marriage, and her husband was aware of her pregnancy. Her sister, Pauline Mumba, expressed the family’s profound grief over the loss of both her sister and niece.

The police have initiated an investigation into the matter, opening a case of concealment of birth. They await the results of the postmortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death for both the mother and the baby.
